Rubber-Cal Helps ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Honor an American Hero

Even during times of intense political tension, ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" proves that America still knows how to honor its heroes.

With the help of its continued partners, including Orange County, California-based Rubber-Cal, Inc., the popular home improvement show transformed the lives of Staff Sgt. Patrick Ziegler, a victim of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, and his fiancée Jessica Hansen. The emotional episode aired February 21, 2011 on the ABC Network.

In November 2009, U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan opened fire on Fort Hood, killing thirteen people and wounding thirty others. Staff Sgt. Ziegler suffered a gunshot wound to the head but survived against all odds. Through his remarkable recovery, Patrick reflects the incredible resilience and persistence of the U.S. military. Through it all, he cites Jessica as his strength and guiding force.

Rubber-Cal's staff say they are always honored to be a part of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" but that this episode is especially significant.

"Staff Sgt. Ziegler and his wife Jessica are true American heroes," states Rubber-Cal General Manager Jackie Washington. "Patrick's strength and tenacity are an inspiration. We wanted to do something to thank Patrick for his service and Jessica for her devotion."

The rubber flooring and industrial sheet rubber firm donated its Elephant Bark recycled rubber flooring to be used in Patrick and Jessica's home gym and rehabilitation room. Jackie Washington adds that the all-weather durability and natural elasticity of rubber make Elephant Bark rubber flooring an ideal choice for a soft, sturdy gym floor.

For Patrick and Jessica, this episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is a chance for a fresh start. On behalf of all companies involved in the episode, Rubber-Cal wishes them the best with their new home and a new chance at life.
